What is the Mohawk Valley Formula?
Mohawk Valley Formula definition.
The Mohawk Valley formula is a set of guidelines for strikebreaking based on a propaganda-based framework, firstly written by the president of the Remington Rand company, James Rand, Jr.
The Mohawk Valley formula is characterized by:
- Discreditation of the union leaders with propaganda that labelled them as “agitators”,
- Scaring the public with threats of violence,
- Intimidation of the strikers with the use of “vigilantes”...
“Vigilante groups” were groups of citizens organized to raid union halls, assault strike leaders and try to recruit some workers to be part of the "back-to-work" movements. Small businessmen were often pressured into joining the vigilantes groups, and told that otherwise the company would leave the area.
